On Monday the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) unlawfully detained Daniela Joly Serrano, a petroleum engineer and asylum seeker from Columbia who had been legally living in the United States for just under two years. Daniela is married to Richard Landin, who is a US-born citizen.

Daniela is currently detained in Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, GA according to her mother in law Ana Marie Landin. “What is happening is not acceptable” Ana said in a brief phone interview. “The government is targeting vulnerable people to coerce them to self deport”

The Landin family currently has legal representation, and is looking for support of elected officials and community members in their pursuit of justice. Ana asked for people to call senator Jon Ossof and urge him to use whatever measures he can to ensure the safe release of Daniela Joly Serrano.

Ana would go onto warn “Most importantly people need to be aware that ICE agents lure you out with lies. If they do not have a warrant to enter into your home then do not step outside your property and ask them to return when they have a warrant”

The family has been in contact with Daniela who has not yet been deported. Daniela has a bond hearing on the 21st. The family is hopeful for her release before her birthday on the 28th.

UPDATE - JUN 5th, 2025

Daniela has since been transferred to an immigration detention facility in El Paso, Texas. Her bond has been set at $10,000 and the family is currently trying to crowdsource funds. It is still unsure whether Daniela will be allowed to remain in the US, but her husband remains hopeful Richard that they will be reunited soon.
